The German education system provides different paths for students based on personal skills. Children go to German primary school (Grundschule) at age 6. After Grundschule, when most students are 10 years old, the German school system takes students into different school forms. And here are the main courses of getting secondary education.
The Hauptschule (grades 5-9) leads to receipt of the Hauptschule certificate and then to part-time study combined with training until the age of 18. The lowest-achieving students attend the Hauptschule, where they receive easier and more basic instruction in the same subjects.
The Realschule (grades 5-10) leads to receipt of the Realschule certificate and then to vocational schools or further study at a Gymnasium. The Realschule provides students with an education with liberal and practical education.
The Gymnasium provides students with a liberal education and tends to study at the university. The Gymnasium (grades 5-13) leads to the Abitur and prepares students for university. The German Abitur is a qualification gained after 12 or 13 years of school education in a German school, allowing the holder to study any subject at any higher education institution. After getting the Abitur student can enter the university to get a higher education.
